Pirates open season with strong times

FULLERTON -- The Orange Coast College men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2012 season at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational on Saturday and despite a field filled with four-year colleges, the Pirates more than held their own.
 
The OCC women finished the event in seventh place overall -- third among community colleges (Cerritos and Moorpark tied for fifth with 177 points).
 
Coast's top runner on Saturday was Carmille Garcia, who tackled the 5K course with a time of 19 minutes, 49.1 seconds, good enough for 32nd place.

On the men's side, the Pirates finished ninth overall -- third among community colleges -- with a team score of 246. Only Cerritos (115 points) and Glendale (179) finished ahead of the Pirates among two-year schools at the event.
 
Austin Little cracked the top-20 in the 8K event and finished 19th overall with a time of 26 minutes, 27 seconds. Teammate Jay Bonthius placed 45th with a time of 27.07.7.

The Pirates will take to the Woodward Park trails in Fresno on Saturday before returning to familiar surroundings at the 2012 Coast Classic, held on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Fairview Park, beginning at 9 a.m.
