Pirates roll over Irvine Valley in conference opener

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball traveled to always-tough Irvine Valley College to take on the Lasers and the Pirates took care of business, sweeping past the hosts, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18, in the Orange Empire Conference matchup for both teams.

Ripping 30 kills as a team with just six hitting errors the entire night, the Pirates were led by Jack Flynn with nine kills, with Kyle McCauley close behind with eight kills and a team-best five block assists. Setters Enzo Boggio and Jordan Rodriguez paced the offense with a combined 27 assists, while Braden Neumann anchored the defense with six digs.

Through 13 matches this year, the Pirates (13-0, 1-0 in OEC), ranked No. 1 in the state, have won 39 of 44 sets played this year and have swept through nine of their 13 matches thus far. 

Up next for the undefeated Pirates will be a home showdown against rival Golden West College (6-4, 1-0), beginning at 6 p.m. The Rustlers opened OEC play on Wednesday and notched a hard-fought five-set win over Santiago Canyon. GWC was led by the 1-2 punch of Matthew Coleman (17 kills, 13 digs) and Miguel Flores Jr. (13 kills, nine digs). Brandon Prank dished out 37 assists, while libero Tomas Beralas notched 12 digs.
