Dowty leads Pirates to 7-0 win over Hornets

FULLERTON -- Kyle Dowdy pitched a complete-game masterpiece and led the Orange Coast College baseball team to a 7-0 win over first-place Fullerton College on Thursday at Hornet Field.

The sophomore righty improved his record to 5-1 with the shutout win, allowing just four hits with one walk and six strikeouts along the way. Dowdy allowed just three runners to reach as far as second base all afternoon as he baffled the first-place Hornets all afternoon.

With the win, the Pirates (21-9, 9-6) kept within earshot of Fullerton (22-8, 12-3) for the Orange Empire Conference title. Coast now trails the Hornets by three games with six games remaining on the schedule.

Coast picked up a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when a two-out double by Austin Saenz was followed up with an RBI-single by Cody Bruder (2-for-4, one run, one RBI).

From there, the Pirates worked in pairs, scoring two runs in the third, two more in the fourth and two more in the seventh.

Danny Jimenez went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Cristian Salina added a double, two runs scored and one RBI and Ricky Navarro and Manny Argomaniz each produced a hit and an RBI for the Pirates.

There won't be much time to celebrate the win for the Pirates as they return to action on Friday at Riverside City College, beginning at 2 p.m. The Tigers are currently one game behind the Pirates in the OEC standings and four games behind the Hornets.
