Caina paces offense in four-set win over Gauchos

COSTA MESA -- The offense was on a roll for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team and it was paced by freshman setter Camryn Kaina, who dished out 58 assists in the Pirates' 25-13, 25-13, 23-25, 25-17 win over Saddleback on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

The majority of the OCC offense was dished out from Kaina's sets to a trio of hitters, including Hally Herder, who led the Pirates (11-1, 2-1 in Orange Empire Conference) with 14 kills. Middle blocker Lily Johnson added 13 kills, while freshman OH Bailey Coffin added 12 kills.

Julia Brown had 17 kills to led the the offense for the Gauchos (2-7, 1-2).

It looked like a quick evening was on the horizon for the Pirates as they jumped on top of the Gauchos right from the opening serve. Coast rolled out to a 14-4 lead and never looked back as the hosts grabbed the first set with relative ease. Coffin was the big hitter for the Pirates in the opening set with six kills, while Herder was close behind with four.

A 10-1 run midway through the second set was the difference-maker for the Pirates as they matched the score of the opener, 25-13, and had the match completely under control ... or so they thought.

Leading 17-13 in the third, Coast had the chance for the knockout blow and a three-set sweep, but the Gauchos came to life and ripped off a 10-3 run to grab a 23-20 advantage. Three key kills by Samantha Senske and several unforced errors by the Pirates helped the Gauchos creep back into the match.

OCC picked up three straight points out of a timeout to even the set at 23, but kills by Gigi Getz and Brown gave Saddleback the match and continued the match.

The fourth set saw both teams go back and forth early on, but finally, with OCC leading 15-13, a 9-1 run by the Pirates broke OCC away from the Gauchos. A Herder kill on match point ended the evening and gave the Pirates the four-set win.

OCC will return to action on Wednesday night at Golden West College, before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday night against Fullerton. Both matches will begin at 6 p.m.
