Bio

One of the best athletes to ever come out of Orange Coast College, Bill Redding showed greatness on both sides of the ball. A linebacker out of high school, Redding was moved to middle guard in his second game as a freshman, where he flourished throughout his OCC career. Bill was named Team Captain his sophomore season and was OCC’s first All-American selection in three years. In addition to his football career, Redding also played baseball for Wendell Pickens’ Pirates. After Coast, Bill played football at USC, where he started at middle guard for the Trojans as a junior. As a senior, Coach John McKay moved Redding to center. Both years, Redding’s Trojans played in the Rose Bowl and he became the only Trojan to start consecutive Rose Bowls at opposite positions. After playing at USC, Redding was a graduate assistant coach at USC before returning to OCC as a defensive line coach under Dick Tucker. From there, Bill spent several years in Hawaii, where he coached at the high school and college level. For his outstanding athletic career, Redding was included in the Daily Pilot Sports Hall of Fame, celebrating the top Newport-Mesa athletes of the 20th century.
