Bio

The legacy that Dorothy “Dottie” Duddridge established at Orange Coast College cannot be accurately measured by wins and losses. However, the work that Dottie put forth during her 24-year tenure at OCC can be seen throughout the athletic and dance departments. Duddridge was a strong voice who sat back when necessary and became a strong leader when needed in women’s athletics and governing bodies. Duddridge helped build and grow the Women’s Athletic Association, where she helped guide the Pirates to several WAA women’s tennis titles.

In addition to the team accolades, Duddridge helped lead several OCC women to the prestigious Ojai Tennis Tournament and those ladies helped give Coast the foundation it would need to enable women’s tennis to be one of the top programs in Pirate athletic history. Along with fellow OCC Hall of Famer Sue Brown, Duddridge was a catalyst for restructuring OCC’s athletic division as a result of Title IX and helped rewrite most of the course outlines.

In addition to her athletic legacy, Duddridge recognized a new place in higher education for the artistic discipline of dance and established the OCC dance department in 1962. She built student interest for modern dance, ballet, tap and ballroom dance, among others, and helped the department flourish with the additions of nationally recognized experts and top-of-the-line programs.
