Bio
One of only four athletes in Orange Coast College history to be named the school’s Athlete of the Year twice, Julie Slattery Shapiro definitely made the most of her two-year tenure as a Pirate. Following an outstanding prep career at Edison High School where she was a multiple CIF qualifier in both singles and doubles, Julie came to Coast and immediately made a flawless transition to the collegiate level. As a freshman, Julie won both singles and doubles championship (with teammate Natalie Hastings) in every event she played, including the Orange Empire Conference championship, the Southern California Regionals, the Ojai Invitational and the California Community College State Championships. In 1989, it was more of the same as Julie and Natalie swept through conference, regionals, Ojai and state once again, while in singles, she won the OEC title and finished second in regionals, Ojai and state. Her dominant play earned her OCC Female Athlete of the Year honors both years, joining Tami LaVelle (1983-84), Zoila Gomez (1999-2000) and Humberto Rojas (2004-05). Following her amazing Coast career, Julie continued her academic and athletic careers at Cal Poly Pomona, where she helped the Broncos to the Division II National Championship as a senior and national runners-up as a junior. A two-time All-American and All-CCAA selection, Julie won back-to-back conference singles titles and finished runner-up in the nation as a junior and as a senior. Her outstanding play earned her the Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award as well as the Senior National Player of the Year in 1992.
