Bio

Forever the answer to Orange Coast College sports trivia, Ken Moats already has earned some notoriety as the first athlete to ever be named OCC’s Athlete of the Year (1948). His all-around athletic ability helped the Pirates’ baseball team to the school’s first-ever conference title. He played center and linebacker on the first-ever Pirate football team and catcher for two seasons on the first-ever baseball team. As a sophomore, Moats helped lead the OCC football team to an 8-2 record and a top-20 finish in the national JC rankings — not bad for a second-year program. Moats earned a baseball scholarship to UCLA, where he was named Student Body Vice President, Lettermen’s Club President and President of the Associated Men Student’s Club. He was named team Captain of his baseball teams, both at OCC and UCLA. Moats later played one season of professional baseball in the Milwaukee Braves organization. From there, Moats was a teacher for 53 years and coached football, track, wrestling and baseball throughout most of his career. Was awarded the Cap Sheue Community Service Award and was selected as “Coach of the Year” in baseball and football multiple times while working in the Huntington Beach Union High School District.
