Bio

One of the best-known names to come out of Orange Coast College, Steve Timmons’ long and outstanding athletic career began to grow roots at OCC, where he was one of the top all-around athletes to ever call Coast home. He was a standout basketball player and volleyball player that helped guide the Pirates to their lone men’s hoops state title in 1978–79 with a 27–5 overall record. A product of Newport Harbor High School, Timmons continued his amazing athletic career from OCC to USC, where he helped guide the Trojans to a men’s volleyball national championship (1980) and three Final Four appearances during his collegiate career.

A two-time All-American selection, Timmons’ career reached epic proportions in 1984, where he earned MVP honors and helped guide the U.S. National Men’s Volleyball Team to its first-ever gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Four years later, Timmons and the rest of Team USA repeated the feat at the Summer Olympics in Seoul. Finally, in 1992 Timmons helped lead the Americans to a bronze medal at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, becoming the second player to ever win three Olympic medals.

Thanks to his relentless hard work and dedication to the sport, Steve was named to the 1992 Olympics All-Spectacular Team. One of the all-time greats in volleyball, Timmons was named to Volleyball Magazine’s All-Century Team, Volleyball Monthly’s USC/UCLA Dream Team, Volleyball Magazine’s All-Time Indoor Team, and USA Volleyball’s 75th Anniversary All-Era Team. Steve was inducted into the OCC Hall of Fame in 1989, the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, the California Community College Hall of Fame in 1998, the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1998 and the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.
