Pirates win several races at Stanford Invitational
REDWOOD SHORES -- The Orange Coast College men's crew headed north to compete in the 2016 Stanford Invitational this past weekend and the results were strong for the Pirates.
On Saturday morning, OCC's Varsity 8 took on Washington State and pulled away for a four-second win, crossing the finish line with a time of 6 minutes, 9.3 seconds. WSU came in with a time of 6:13.3.
That same morning, OCC's Second Varsity 8 took on the Cougars and rolled to a 13-second, open-water win with a time of 6:12.9. WSU clocked in at 6:25.7.
In the afternoon, Coast's two varsity squads took on powerhouse Cal and despite two second-place times, the Pirates performed well and posted two of their fastest times of the season. OCC's Varsity 8 came in with a time of 5:59.2 (Cal 5:48.4), while the Second Varsity 8 came in with a 6:11.5 (Cal 6:02.5).
On Sunday, both teams took on UC Davis and both prevailed with solid victories. The Varsity 8 came in with a time of 6:00.3, while UCD clocked in at 6:04.2, while the Second Varsity 8 raced to a time of 6:16.5, well ahead of UCD's time of 6:32.4
In addition to the Stanford Invitational, several members of the OCC crew competed down in Newport Harbor at the Chapman Invitational and all crews won their races against Long Beach State and Champan University. The highlight of the event was a solid, 13-second victory by the Varsity 4 crew, who cruised to an open-water victory.
The Pirates will return to the water up in Sacramento at the WIRA Championships, set for April 30-May 1.
