Pirates post strong times at Stanford Invitational
REDWOOD SHORES -- The Orange Coast College men's crew posted solid times and battled some of the top crews in the northern region this past weekend at the Stanford Invitational.
OCC's Varsity 8 took part in three races over the weekend. On Friday, Coast took on the University of Washington's Third Varsity 8 as well as a strong 15 mile-per-hour headwind, which made racing even more difficult. The Pirates hung tough and rowed a solid race and came in with a time of 6 minutes, 30.5 seconds.
On Saturday, under much better racing conditions, Coast opened things with a matchup against Cal's Third Varsity 8 and after an early lead against the reigning IRA National Champions, the Golden Bears pulled ahead late and won by just over six seconds, with OCC's posting a time of 6:07.1.
Later in the afternoon, OCC took on UC Davis and this time, held on to its early advantage the entire length of the race, posting a winning time of 6:01.58, six seconds ahead of UCD's time of 6:07.
The Second Varsity and Novice 8+ also competed strongly. The Second Varsity performed extremely well and after a time trial race on Friday, won their Saturday race over UC Davis by 19 seconds, clocking in with a mark of 6:11.44. The Novice continued their strong showing, besting Santa Clara's 3rd Varsity 8+ by 14 seconds with a time of 6:34.6. They raced above their weight on Saturday against Cal's 4th Varsity and held them to within 13 seconds with a time of 6:15.8.
