Pirate men capture Collins Cup over UC Irvine
NEWPORT HARBOR -- The Orange Coast College men's crew ruled the waters on Saturday at Newport Harbor as the Pirates topped UC Irvine for the Collins Cup.
The Collins Cup -- awarded to the school with the fastest Varsity 8 result -- was earned by the Pirates as they went neck and neck with the Anteaters for the entire 2,000-meter race. In the end, it was the Pirates who had just a little more gas in the tank and crossed the finish line with a winning time of 6 minutes, 17.9 seconds, just ahead of UCI's time of 6:18.5.
OCC and UCI also competed in four other races, with both teams winning two. For the Pirates, they captured first place in the Men's Second Novice 8 race with an open-water winning time of 6:57.6 (UCI: 7:35.5) and the Men's Novice 8 race (6:42.8), with a 24-second win over the Anteaters (7:06.5). UCI edged the Pirates in the Men's Varsity 4 by three seconds with a time of 7:08.2 (OCC: 7:11.8) and the 'Eaters took the Men's Novice 4 with a time of 7:24.7 (OCC: 7:55.4).
The Pirates will return to competition on April 29-30 at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships (WIRA), held at Sacramento's Lake Natoma. From there, the Pirates will travel to Tennessee for the American Collegiate Racing Association (ACRA) Championships, set for May 19.
