Bio
Following the career of longtime skipper Laird Hayes, another OCC veteran – Kevin Smith – continues his fine work in his fifth year as the men’s soccer coach.
After starting the 2013 season 1-3-1, the Pirates regrouped and made history, winning the Orange Empire Conference for the first time since 1991, going 9-2-3 in conference play (10-5-4 overall) before losing to Rio Hondo in the Southern California Regional playoffs. Smith earned OEC Coach of the Year honors in 2013.
It was a solid year for the Pirates in 2012 as he helped lead OCC to a third-place finish in the Orange Empire Conference and its first playoff berth since 2006. In the playoffs, the 13th-seeded Pirates upset fourth-seeded Oxnard 2-1 before falling in the second round to Chaffey, 2-0.
Smith adds men’s soccer to his ever-growing list of sports on his already-impressive resume. In addition to men’s soccer, Smith also leads the OCC women’s soccer program and is the school's Athletic Director.
In his first season as the Pirates' skipper, Smith helped guide the Pirate women’s team into the third round of the playoffs. He repeated that feat in 2011 and helped the ladies into the second round in 2012.
Prior to his arrival at Coast, Smith was a teacher and head boys soccer coach at Cypress High School since 1998.
From 1989-1997, Smith worked at Fountain Valley High School as a resident substitute teacher and was the director of coaching for the boys' varsity soccer program from 1991-97, where he helped guide the Barons to two trips to the CIF-Southern Section finals.
A standout soccer player, Smith attended Edison High School, where he earned all-league honors as a junior and all-league, all-county and All-CIF honors as a senior.
As a collegiate player, Smith played the UC Irvine, where he earned All-Big West Conference honors in 1989, 1991 and 1992 and All-Mountain Pacific Conference in 1993. He left UCI as the school’s all-time scoring leader with 68 points.
Following his ’Eater career, Smith played professional soccer for the Los Angeles Salsa of the USISL (1995), the Bournmouth Football Club of the Jewson Wessex League in England (1994) and the East L.A. Cobras of the USISL (1993).
Smith has also enjoyed coaching stints with the Olympic Development Program (1992-1993), UC Irvine (1993), the Mission Pateadores Soccer Club (1990-1995) and the Wolfpack Soccer Club (1996-2006).
In addition to his time with the women’s soccer program, Smith also is the head coach for OCC’s men’s soccer program as well as the women’s softball team in the spring.
Smith, his wife, Alyson and his two children, Brynn and Keegan, currently reside in Orange.
