Pirate women first, OCC men second at inaugural home meet!

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's and women's swim teams welcomed competitors from the Orange Empire Conference into the waters of their new Aquatics Pavilion on Friday and the hosts notched several individual victories along the way.

On the women's side, the Pirates earned eight individual and relay wins en route to a meet-best 165 team points. Golden West (115 points) finished second, followed by Fullerton (89), Cypress (58) and Saddleback (31). On the men's side, Coast and Cypress finished tied for second overall with 112 points, just two points behind team winner Saddleback (114), with GWC (99) and Fullerton (45) completing the team scoring. 

For the OCC women, Sude Yilmazturk earned a pair of wins in Friday's meet, touching the wall first in both the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.18) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.97).

In fact, it was a 1-2 finish for the Pirates in the 100 fly with teammate Alaire Thomas finishing second (1:06.19). And, in the 100 back, Yilmazturk was followed by Delaney Lewellyn (1:04.79) and Thomas (1:05.9) in a 1-2-3 Pirate finish.

Another 1-2 result occurred in the 50 freestyle, where Sarah Maver (25.37) edged out OCC teammate Destiny Hernandez (26.45) in another impressive Coast performance.

Journey Weaver was the top swimmer in the 100 freestyle with a winning time of 56.32, while in the 100 breaststroke, OCC's Yuuri Yoshikawa led all swimmers with a time of 1:11.36.

Coast was also a perfect 3-for-3 in relay events, taking the top spot in the 200 medley relay (1:56.78), the 200 free relay (1:44.93) and the 400 free relay (3:56.93.)

On the men's side, Arnaud Parmentier won the most competitive race of the meet by edging out three other swimmers at the wall for a winning time of 49.1 seconds in the 100 freestyle. Three other swimmers finished less than a second behind Parmentier. 

In the 100 butterfly, Luke Venzlaff picked up a three-second win with a time of 51.66, while in the 100 breaststroke, Jakob Otte prevailed with a winning time of 1:02.75.

OCC also picked up relay wins in the 200 medley relay (1:39.12) as well as the 400 free relay (3:18.65).

The new Aquatics Pavilion will be well populated once again on May 13-14 as the Pirates host the OEC Swimming Prelims and Championships. The prelims will kick off on May 13 at 11 a.m. with the finals set to begin on May 14 at 5 p.m. (no fans allowed).
