Pirates back on winning track

COSTA MESA -- After a rough spell against some top teams, the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team picked up a pair of home victories to get back into winning mode, topping Grossmont on Wednesday in four sets before sweeping San Diego Mesa on Friday.

In the win over the Griffins, Will Anderson led the way with 16 kills, eight digs and six total blocks, while Caden Saterfield added 14 kills and three digs. Al Hussein had a .714 hitting percentage with 10 kills on 14 attempts with no errors, while setter Kohl Kutsch dished out 38 assists.

On Friday, the Pirates emptied the bench and found some solid results up and down the lineup. Saterfield led the way with seven kills, while Hunter Dickey ripped six kills and Carter Depue added five. Eric Beebe had 30 assists, while Beebe and Brayden Batungbacal each had four digs.

Coast blasted out of the gates in the opening set against Mesa, jumping out to a 21-8 lead before the Olympians picked up some momentum with an 8-4 run before falling in the opener.

Mesa, led by seven kills by Pancho Verdugo and six by Matthew Hursky, stayed close with the Pirates as they mixed and matched their lineup throughout the match. Trailing, 23-18, the Olympians nearly stunned OCC with a 6-0 run and a set-point opportunity at 24-23.

But a wide serve by Mesa, a kill by Dickey and a long return by the Olympians allowed Coast to grab a 2-0 lead in the match.

It was ALL Coast in the third set as the hosts ripped off the first seven points and 17 of the first 19 and never looked back.

Coast begins a four-match road swing on Wednesday at Palomar College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Friday against Santiago Canyon, also at 6 p.m.
