Pirates improve to 4-0 with four-set win over Rustlers

COSTA MESA -- The winning continues inside the Peterson Gym for the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team as the Pirates rolled past rival Golden West in four sets on Friday night to improve to 4-0 overall and in the Orange Empire Conference.

The hitting trio of Calvin Sanborn (15 kills), Carter Depue (13 kills) and Caden Satterfield (12 kills) paced OCC's attack on the visiting Rustlers en route to a 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16 win.

Setter Eric Beebe paced the offense with 29 assists, while teammate Sam Walton dished out 16 and libero Cole Tran anchored the defense with 13 of OCC's 24 total digs.

This was the first time thus far this season at the Pirates were pushed beyond the minimum number of sets needed to win as they swept past Fullerton College twice in the opening week of the season (25-17, 25-17, 25-13 at FC and 28-26, 25-15, 25-19 at OCC) and GWC (26-24, 25-15, 25-19) on Wednesday at GWC.

Sanborn has paced the Pirate offense with 31 kills, while Satterfield, Depue and middle blocker Troy Culp had notched 19 kills each. Beebe and Walton have combined for 92 assists, while Tran has come up big on defense with 17 digs through four matches.

With just four matches left in the abbreviated season, OCC will return to action on Wednesday at Santiago Canyon College, before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday against the Hawks. Both matches begin at 6 p.m.

In the final week of the season, it'll be a showdown between the top two teams as OCC takes on Irvine Valley for a pair of matches, beginning on Wednesday, May 12 at IVC (6 p.m.) and Friday, May 14 at OCC (6 p.m.).
