It's been an incredible tenure of coaching for former Pirate player and current Pirate skipper, Travis Turner. After helping OCC to back-to-back state titles as a player under the late, great Bob Wetzel in 1989 and 1990, Turner has continued the winning tradition at OCC with several more conference championships, trips to the state tournament and five CCCAA State Championships.
OCC's most recent trip to the top of the mountain came in 2024 as Turner helped guide the Pirates to a perfect 20-0 record and an 10th state championship in school history (1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1994, 2014, 2017, 2022, 2023, 2024).
Talk about a nice round number ... Turner's last win of 2024 not only notched the school's 100th all-time state/national championship, it also was Turner's 300th career victory. His 300 wins and .829 winning percentage are tops in the history of the program.
In 2021, Turner became OCC's all-time winningest coach with his 235th win, topping Chuck Cutenese for the most wins in school history. His current winning percentage of .816 is also tops in the history of the program.
In addition to the countless number of players Turner has helped move to the four-year level, he has also been a coaching mentor to several former Pirate players who are now assistant or head coaches at various levels of the sport.
After his championship run as a Coast player, Turner transferred to the University of California, where he led Berkeley to two Collegiate Club volleyball titles.
Following his playing career, Turner had guided several teams to various titles. He coached the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club to numerous junior national championships, including 18 & Under national titles in 1998 and 2000.
Turner helped guide Tustin High to a 1995 CIF title and was a quarterfinalist in 1996.
At the collegiate level, Turner was an assistant coach at UC Irvine from 1996-2000 and head coach at Cal from 2001-2002.
The history of OCC men's volleyball is rich with tradition. The Pirates have garnered 18 conference titles and 10 state championships since 1978.
Wetzel posted a 185-61 record from 1978-92, while Cutenese racked up a 233-70 record from 1993-2006.
