Novice 8 highlight solid day for Pirates at Berg Cup

NEWPORT BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's crew hosted the annual Berg Cup down at the OCC Boathouse and the Pirates fared well against their four-year college rivals.

The highlight of the Saturday morning came in the Frosh/Novice 8 race, where the Pirates (Elyse Garski, Jenna Martinez, Jesse Voysey, Lauren Viers, Tracy McDonald, Cora Tsamados, Brenda Meneses, Lauren Davis and coxswain Leah Simko) jumped out to a strong lead, then held off a late charge from UC Santa Barbara to win the 2,000-meter race with a time of 6 minutes, 54.6 seconds. UCSB "A" finished second with a 6:58.9, while Long Beach State (6:59.7) took third.

In the Varsity 8 race, the Pirates fell to third place right away, thanks to fast starts by Loyola Marymount and UCSB, but Coast used the final 1,000 meters to get back within striking distance.

LMU pulled away for the win (6:35.9), with UCSB taking second (6:36.3) and the Pirates (Zoe Robles, Marissa Selby, Madison Kohlenberger, Arielle Craig, Katie McKibbin, Torrie Miraldi, Stacey Gama, Jaime Huie and coxswain Haley Lutton) taking third (6:45.9).

Other Coast results came in the 2nd Varsity 8 (4th, 7:13.8), Varsity 4 (4th, 9:07.9) and JV 4 (2nd, 7:38.3).

Coast will return to action on Saturday, April 12 at 7 a.m. as they compete for the Collins Cup.
