Novice 8 take second for Pirate women at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO -- The Orange Coast College women's crew sent out two boats last weekend at the 2017 San Diego Crew Classic and the Pirates qualified for two grand finals and hung tough against some top-notch four-year competition.

In the Novice 8 race, OCC's Christina Kilby, Milan Goldner, Claire Taylor, Jessica Engelbert, Ashley DeClerck, Dian Tzegaebe, Holli Ulicki, Mikayla Jacobi and Sydney Miller (coxswain), battled UC Davis throughout the entire length of the 2,000-meter race. Down the stretch, UCD was able to pull away and win with a time of 7 minutes, 20.35 seconds, with the Pirates taking second with a 7:25.06. Humboldt State was a distant third with a 7:37.54, while the University of Colorado (7:38.73) finished fourth.

Finally, in the Varsity 8 grand final, Coast took on the best of the best and competed well, settling for a seventh-place time of 7:20.18. Western Washington (6:53.34) took home the top spot, followed by Humboldt State (7:00.87) and Grand Valley (7:07.45). OCC's Varsity 8 consisted of Madison Hank, Sierra Marzalek, Ashleigh Adner, Kirsten Gyorgy, Abby Morgan, Claireliese Kennedy, Maya Takeuchi, Kala Warren and Sophie Blair (coxswain).

The Pirates will return to Newport Harbor and host UC Irvine on Saturday in the 2017 Collins Cup, beginning at 7 a.m.
