Pirates pull out 3-1 win over Lasers

COSTA MESA -- It's been a rough year for the Orange Coast College women's soccer team, but the smiles returned to the Pirates' faces on Friday with a 3-1 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Irvine Valley at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Coast drew first blood in the 10th minute when Eden Makaafi was fouled inside the IVC scoring area, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity. Kylee Brandau stepped up and ripped the PK shot into the back of the net to put the Pirates up, 1-0.

Makaafi pushed the lead up to 2-0 in the final minute of the first half when she took a feed from Lilly Carroll and found the back of the net.

That same duo paired up again in the 46th minute to put the game out of reach as a second Makaafi goal off a Carroll assist pushed the lead up to 3-0.

IVC used a PK goal to make it 3-1, but that would be it for the Lasers' scoring chances.

OCC will return to action on Monday at home against Golden West, beginning at 3 p.m.
