Pirates win Ojai team points competition
OJAI -- While a CCCAA team state title was found elusive this year, the Orange Coast College women's tennis team still came home with some impressive hardware as the Pirates earned the team points title at the Ojai Invitational this past weekend.
With each singles and doubles win counting as one point, the Pirates topped everyone in the state with 25 singles and doubles wins (points) to take the Ojai Women's Community College Team Championship.
OCC's top point-getters for the event were sophomores Logan Koitka and Madeleine Veltri. Koitka won four singles matches, as did Veltri. Together in doubles, the pair won five more times for a total of 13 points for the Pirates.
Camila Nelson won three times in singles and three more times in doubles with her partner, Leanne Pascua. Sedona Smith picked up two singles wins, while Olivia Sipiora won once in singles before the duo won three more times in doubles.
It was a magical season all around for the Pirate women's tennis team, winning 21 straight matches and the Orange Empire Conference title before coming up just short in the CCCAA Women's Tennis State Championship in a 5-3 loss to American River.
With just four sophomores on this year's squad, the sky is the limit for coach Chris Ketcham's talented Pirate team.
