Pirates topple Santa Ana, Golden West

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's beach volleyball team took care of its business on Friday, posting a pair of convincing Orange Empire Conference wins over Santa Ana (4-1) and Golden West (5-0) at the Newland Street Volleyball Courts.

In the win over the Dons, Coast (8-5, 6-2 in OEC) started strong with a 21-7, 21-13 win by the Pirate duo of Camryn Kaina and Shannon Stone. OCC fell on the No. 2 court, but from there, it was ALL Pirates with victories by the teams of Rylee Adair/Lily Johnson (21-16, 21-14), Hannah Reid/Lu Lualdi (21-23, 21-4, 15-8), and Mackenzie Bill/Hally Herder (21-12, 21-15).

In the win over the rival Rustlers, OCC picked up a pair of hard-fought three-set wins to help complete the five-match sweep. Kaina and Stone went the distance, but prevailed, 21-13, 19-21, 15-7, while at No. 2, Kacey Mathieson and Bailey Coffin overcame an opening-set stumble to win, 20-22, 21-15, 15-13.

At No. 3, Adair/Johnson rolled to a 21-6, 21-7 win. At No. 4, Bill/Herder posted a 21-12, 21-16 win, while at No. 5, Lualdi and teammate Stephanie Garcia cruised to a 21-12, 21-11 victory.

With the wins, OCC has earned the top spot in the OEC's West Division, with the top two teams from the West and East earning spots in the upcoming Regional Playoffs.

Coast will return to the Newland Courts on Friday as the Pirates host Fullerton College, beginning at 10 a.m.
