Pirates slow down Roadrunners, 5-0

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College beach volleyball team took care of business on Wednesday, rolling past visiting Rio Hondo College, 5-0, in a nonconference matchup played on the Newland Courts.

It was smooth sailing for the Pirates (3-0) as all matches were won with little trouble. At No. 1, the team of Lily Johnson and Thea Snider cruised to a 21-13, 21-13 win, while at No. 2, Amber McCarthy and Logan Wheeler rolled to a 21-16, 21-11 win.

It was more of the same for Coast as Bailey Coffin/Lucrezia Lualdi (21-14, 21-15) and Joceline Martinez/Giuliana Irvine (21-15, 21-14) picked up straight-set wins at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. Breanna Dong and Hailey Reid picked up a win at No. 5 by default.

The opposition will be much tougher for OCC's next match as the Pirates travel to Irvine Valley to take on the Lasers in the Orange Empire Conference opener on Friday, beginning at 10 a.m.
