Pirates grounded by Mounties

COVINA -- The Orange Coast College football team dropped to 1-4 this season after a 49-19 loss to Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday night at the Covina District Field.

The Pirates found some success on offense in the air, but were silenced on the ground, being held for minus-7 yards rushing as a team. It was the first time in 20 seasons that OCC was held to minus-yards on the ground (-6 vs. Saddleback, 1997).

Quarterback Pete Mitchell threw for 200 yards with a touchdown and an interception on 18-of-27 passing and helped OCC carry a 12-7 lead into the first quarter with a 1-yard TD run and a 14-yard TD pass to James Rutledge.

But it was all Mt. SAC (4-1) the rest of the evening as the Mounties racked up 538 yards of total offense and kept the Pirates off of the scoreboard until a late TD pass from Ayden Auer to Christian Pryor closed out the scoring.

Bayley Wolff caught five passes for 91 yards, while Pryor finished with five catches for 68 yards and Rutledge finished with a team-best six receptions for 40 yards.

For the Mounties, Richard Stammetti threw for 152 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Hykeem Massey rushed 127 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Receiver Brice Hoenisch pulled in a pair of touchdown passes for his two receptions.

The Pirates will be off this weekend, but will return to Dick Tucker Field on Saturday, Oct. 14 against Palomar, beginning at 6 p.m.
