Pirates fall to Jaguars in season finale

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College football team saw its 2018 season come to an end on Saturday night with a 42-21 loss to visiting Southwestern at Dick Tucker Field.

Ahmad Lewis rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries to lead the Pirates (1-9, 0-5 in conference), while the passing tandem of Nathan West and Pete Mitchell threw for 199 yards on 18-of-32 passing. But, an early 21-point deficit was just too much to overcome for OCC as the Jaguars (7-3, 2-3) scored on their first three possessions and held serve with the Pirates the rest of the evening.

Coast managed to rack up 407 yards of total offense, but the Jags managed to up that ante with 432 yards of total offense, averaging 7.6 yards per play.

Deandre Daniels rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns for SWC, while Demonte Morris threw for 139 yards and a touchdown on 9-of-20 pasing to go along with 32 rushing yards on eight carries and a rushing TD.

On defense, Tavita Crisp led the way with eight tackles, while Michael Archer added seven tackles, including a forced fumble and an interception for the Pirates.

After the early 21-0 deficit, the Pirates managed to sneak back into the game and with 12:40 left in the fourth quarter, an 8-yard TD run by Lewis and a successful 2-point score by Lewis trimmed the deficit down to 28-15.

But on the next drive for SWC, running back DeAngelo Howard ran right, got cornered, then, reversed field to his left and dashed 63 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, taking the air out of the Pirates' balloon.

Prior to the game, OCC acknowledged the team's 29 sophomores and their families for their contributions to the Pirate football program and to Orange Coast College for the past two seasons.
