Pirates break skid with rout over Dons

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team took a month's worth of frustration out on visiting Santa Ana College as the Pirates rolled past the visiting Dons, 97-68, on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Josh Mendoza led the Pirates (8-17, 1-9 in Orange Empire Conference) with 25 points, while Tim Pena added 16 points, Kamar Reese chipped in 15 and Nate Harding contributed 11.

QV Johnson led the Dons (6-10, 1-9) with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but the rest of the Dons' players combined for 15-of-44 from the floor (34%).

Coast jumped out in front early and never looked back. Midway through the first half, the Pirates led, 26-20, then turned on the jets for a 20-10 run and led 46-30 at the half.

But it was the second half where the Pirates pulled away, using a 19-1 run over the first seven minutes and the rout was on.

Coast built up a 47-point advantage with 9:03 left in the game before cruising to the win, snapping a nine-game losing streak.

The Pirates will play at Irvine Valley College on Friday (5 p.m.) before wrapping up the season at home for "Coaches vs. Cancer Night" against Fullerton on Tuesday, also at 5 p.m.
