Coast tops Gauchos, Hawks in rescheduled meet

MISSION VIEJO -- Six different competitors picked up first-place performances to lead the Orange Coast College men's track and field team to a solid win over Saddleback and Santiago Canyon on Friday.

The Pirates outscored the Hawks and the Gauchos by the same score -- 98-56 -- in a meet that was postponed on Feb. 8 due to rainy weather.

The Pirates were led by a trio of jumpers in the men's long jump event as Cameron Pizzica, Andy Bardine and Corey Hamilton were the only three competitors to clear 20 feet. Pizzica won the event with a jump of 21-feet, 9 inches. Bardine came in second with a mark of 20-11, while Hamilton took third at 20-4 1/2.

Another strong 1-2-3 finish came in the javelin, where Darrin Halliday topped teammates Pizzica and Bardine for the top spot. Halliday dominated the field with a throw of 156-5 3/4. Pizzica took second at 149-5 3/4 and Bardine placed third with a 144-4 1/4.

Another win in the jumping events took place for the Pirates in the triple jump, where Emanuel Valencia claimed the top spot with a mark of 43-1 3/4.

The running events also had several top performances for the Pirates. In the 800, Weston Hall was the lone sub-2-minute runner with a winning time of 1 minute, 59.06 seconds.

In the 1,500, Jay Bonthius claimed the top spot with a 4:03.88.

Highlighting a busy day, Bardine crossed the finish line first in the 110 hurdles, winning with a time of 15.57.

OCC will return to action on Friday at Santa Ana College, beginning at 1 p.m.
