Pirate men capture top spot at Last Chance Meet

COSTA MESA -- It was a strong final tune-up for the Orange Coast College men's track and field team as the Pirates topped the field at Friday's "Last Chance Meet" at OCC.

The Pirates hosted a blend of top two- and four-year programs from across the area and finished the meet with the top team score of 198.50 points, followed by Long Beach City (135.50), El Camino (82.50) and Modesto (77). 

Coast earned four first-place marks throughout Friday's meet. In the 400-meter hurdles, Ashton Fegel conquered the hurdles and an impressive field of runners, crossing the finish line with a winning time of 55.05 seconds. 

Fegal then joined Anthony Gibbs, Jeff Hass and Felix Fontaneaus in the 1,600 relay and edged out Modesto's foursome by less than a second to win the race with a time of 3:19.05, followed by MJC (3:19.79) and El Camino (3:25.01). 

It was a 1-2-3 finish for the Pirates in the hammer throw as Adrian Moreno topped his Pirate teammates with a winning throw of 158-2, followed by fellow Coast competitors Tad Desembrana (126-2) and Joseph Horton (125-11).

Coast took two of the top-three spots in the javelin, with Joseph Mejorada winning the event with a throw of 172-7, more than 20 feet further than the rest of the field. Fellow Pirate, Gavin Meyer finished third overall with a throw of 144-6.

Other top-three times for the Pirates included Viencent Luong-Kha in the 1,500 (2nd, 4:08.71), Fontaeus in the 400 (2nd, 49.58). Ryan Welton in the 800 (2nd, 1:57.67), Hector Espana in the 3,000 (2nd, 9:00.26), Moreno in the shot put (2nd, 44-2) and the discus (2nd, 122-3), Meyer in the pole vault (3rd, 11-0), August Garcia in the 3,000 (3rd, 9:13.7), and the 400 relay (3rd, 43.21).

The Pirates are now preparing for the final big races of the year, starting with the Orange Empire Conference Prelims and Finals. The Prelims will be held on Friday at Fullerton College, beginning at 1 p.m., with the Finals set for Friday, April 28 at Fullerton College, beginning at 12 p.m.
