Coast goes 2-2 at Golden West invite

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team went 2-2 this past weekend at the Golden West College Men's Water Polo Invitational, held at GWC and Cerritos College.

On Friday, the Pirates (14-9) opened things with a 24-15 loss to Los Angeles Valley College. Scott Brush led the Pirates with four goals, while Dillon Avila added three goals. Single goals were turned in by Taos Cadarette, Matthew John, Trent Hayes and Matt Shrout.

In the nitecap, Coast took on Cerritos and edged the host Falcons, 12-11. The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead, only to see the Falcons chip away and eventually tie the match at 11 late in the fourth period. But the Pirates managed to take the lead late and hold off the hosts the rest of the way.

The Pirates carried that momentum into Saturday's action and started their day with an 18-8 win over Ventura. Brush and Jake Davis each scored five goals to pace OCC's offense, while Avila added two goals and Hayes, John, Cadarette and Wyatt Ferris each added one goal.

In their last match of the tourney, Coast battled Grossmont College and despite a strong start, the Pirates could not hold off the Griffins and lost, 14-13. Brush scored five goals to lead the Pirates, while Avila and Davis each chipped in three and Hayes and Garret Glore had one each.

The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Golden West. The Rustlers are tied for first place with Coast atop the Orange Empire Conference standings and the winner will be crowned the 2014 OEC champs.
