Ramirez tops the field to win SoCal Championship!

VAN NUYS -- Orange Coast College sophomore standout Lucio Ramirez took on the top runners in Southern California and topped them all, winning the individual title at the 2014 Southern California Regional Meet, held at Woodley Park.

Ramirez, who won the Orange Empire Conference individual title last weekend, conquered the four-mile course and won the SoCal title with a time of 20 minutes, 3 seconds, two seconds ahead of runner-up Connor Fisher of Cuesta (20:05).

His strong performance helped the Pirates earn a spot at the California Community College Athletic Association's State Meet, held at Fresno's Woodward Park, on Nov. 22. Coast finished fifth as a team with a team score of 190, topped only by College of the Canyons (90), Mt. San Antonio (121), San Bernardino Valley (135) and Cuesta (177).

Joining Ramirez in the top-20 for the Pirates was fellow sophomore Brandon Ferguson, who placed 18th with a time of 20:43.3.

Other top times for the Pirates included Eamon Smythe (21:29.5), Jorge Jeronimo (21:37.8), Ryan Ogan (21:42.8), Jesus Valdez (22:02.1) and Efrain Vargas (22:35.6).
