Pirate men take sixth at Vanguard Invitational

ORANGE -- Taking on a field of top four-year runners, the Orange Coast College men's cross country fared well against the "big boys" and finished sixth overall at the 2019 Vanguard Invitational on Friday at Irvine Regional Park.

The Pirates posted the top team score of any California Community College in the field and posted a team score of 146.

Tyler Savely and teammate Brian Soriano-Guzman battled each other for the top OCC time and in the end, Savely (25:41.6) edged out Soriano-Guzman (25:41.7), finishing the 8K course in 17th and 18th place overall, respectively. 

Kuki Watanabe (26:21.6), Andrew Lopez (26:38.6) and Peter Antunez (27:22.2) were the other top-five point scorers for the Pirates, who finished ahead of several four-year programs, including Hope International University (183 points), host Vanguard University (202), Biola (231) and Marymount (381).

Other top results for the Pirates included Adam Angel (28:25.1), Joseph Pena (28:39.7), Gavin McNeill (30:34.9), Anthony Osorio (31:13.7), Kevin Carrera (32:09.2), Mateo Nicanor (32:09.9), Edward Ramirez (36:54) and Israel Delibrado (37:32.3).

OCC will return to action on Friday, Oct. 25 at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Invitational, beginning at 5 p.m.
