Pirates Open 2020 Campaign with 3-1 Victory over SB Valley

COSTA MESA -- Two first inning runs on Wednesday proved to be enough as the Pirates defeated San Bernardino Valley College 3-1 in their season opener at Orange Coast College.

Jaelyn Operana wasted little time to notch OCC's first hit of the season with a leadoff triple before scoring on an Ally Cisneros single that put Coast up 1-0 just two batters into the game. After Cisneros moved to second base on a wild pitch, Janae Gomez singled through the left side with a throwing error on the play allowing Cisneros to score what would go down as the eventual game-winning run.

The score remained 2-0 Pirates through four innings before the visiting Wolverines got on the board in the top of the fifth when Alyssa Mays reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Hailey Krah to score. But Coast quickly got that run back in the bottom of the fifth when Madison LeClaire doubled down the left field line to score Gomez, putting the Pirates up 3-1.

The Wolverines managed just one more hit over the final two frames as Operana closed out her complete-game victory holding Valley to one unearned run on five hits with five strikeouts. Gomez and LeClaire each finished two-for-three at the plate for the Pirates while LeClaire and Cisneros had one RBI apiece.

The Pirates return to action on Friday when they host College of the Canyons at 2 p.m.
