Pirates roll to 4-1 win over Rio Hondo

The arm of Jaelyn Operana and the bat of Madison LeClaire were all the Orange Coast College softball team needed to pick up a 4-1 nonconference win over visiting Rio Hondo College on Friday at the OCC Softball Complex.

Operana started and closed the game for the Pirates (2-3), pitching 5 2/3 total innings and allowed no runs on three hits with one strikeout.

OCC picked up all four runs for the game in the bottom of the third. A walk, a fielding error and a single loaded the bases with nobody out and LeClaire stepped up and cleared the bases with a three-run double to right-center, putting the Pirates up, 3-0. Four batters later, Joanna Michaels lined a single to center to score LeClaire for the fourth Pirate run.

Rio Hondo (5-6) picked up an unearned run in the top of the sixth and had a pair of runners on the top of the seventh, but the pitching combo of Operana and Ally Cisneros managed to keep the Roadrunners off of the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Cisneros went 2-for-3 with run scored for the Pirates. Other hits were turned in by Ashley Boss, Caitlyn Sideris and Katherine Sua.

OCC will return to action on Tuesday at home against Golden West College, beginning at 2 p.m.
