Pirates fall to Lasers in OEC opener

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team opened Orange Empire Conference play with an 89-41 loss to host Irvine Valley College on Wednesday night.

Coast came out strong in the opening quarter and trailed, 15-12, but from there, the Lasers took care of business and pulled away from the shorthanded Pirates.

Jalisa Simons led Coast with 20 points and six rebounds, while Monet Oncu added 13 points.

For the Lasers (11-3, 1-0 in OEC), Emma Vasquez hit six 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 23 points. Anai Washington added 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Megan Herrera and Lexi Vail each tossed in 11 points.

Coast will return to action on Friday at Santa Ana College, beginning at 7 p.m. OCC's next home game will take place on Wednesday vs. Riverside City College, also at 7 p.m.
