Pirates fall to IVC, 92-75

COSTA MESA -- The baskets were falling fast and furious for both teams, but for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team, the depth of the Irvine Valley Lasers was too much to overcome as the Pirates fell, 92-75, on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Jalisa Simons led OCC with 25 points and eight rebounds, while Raelynn Denson added 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Monet Oncu and Nefertiti Van Den Heever each added 12 points as well for the Pirates.

IVC was led offensively by Anai Washington with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Zoe Stachowski was limited all night due to foul trouble, but still managed to toss in 20 points and grab nine rebounds. Lexi Vail added 17 points, six rebounds, 11 assists and four steals in a solid, all-around performance.

Coast did the best it could with exchanging basket for basket early on as the Pirates trailed by only five, 29-24, after the opening quarter. Simons carried the offense in the first half with 22 points, keeping the Pirates within striking distance at the half, trailing, 53-44.

But the IVC defense made Simons its top priority and the freshman standout was held to just two second-half points, while the Lasers slowly built up a 20-point advantage and never looked back.

OCC will return to action on Wednesday at home against Santa Ana, beginning at 7 p.m.
