Better start leads to 12-point win for Pirates over Hornets

FULLERTON -- Meghan McIntyre and Annie Trinh carried the majority of the offensive load for the Orange Coast College women's basketball team as the Pirates cruised to a 61-49 Orange Empire Conference win over host Fullerton College on Wednesday night inside the Hornets Nest.

McIntyre led the state's third-ranked Pirates (23-1, 7-1 in the OEC) with 24 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Trinh added 14 points.

For the Hornets (10-13, 1-6), Angela Zendejas had 15 points, while Jessica Jones added 12 points. Bri Landeros anchored the boards with a game-best 17 rebounds.

It was a MUCH different story from the when both teams faced each other back on Jan. 6 ... a 96-94 double-overtime victory that the Pirates survived. On Wednesday, Coast jumped out to an 18-9 lead after one quarter and led the entire rest of the way, leading by as many as 22 points at one point of the contest.

By sheer volume, the Pirates outscored the Hornets by 18 points from 3-point range, but the OCC shooters struggled from downtown, hitting just 7-of-34 for the night. The Pirate defense clamped down and held the Hornets to just 15-of-67 shooting from the floor and an icy 1-of-17 from 3-point range.

Coast will have the rest of the week off before preparing for the biggest game of the season as the Pirates travel to Cypress College to take on the Chargers (18-5, 6-1) for sole possession of first place in the OEC standings. That game will take place on Wednesday, beginning at 5 p.m.
