Pirates compete with best at 2013 Berg Cup

NEWPORT BEACH -- Under ideal racing conditions inside the Newport Harbor, the Orange Coast College women's crew took on some of the top four-year schools in California on Saturday for the 2013 Berg Cup.

Competing in five of the six races of the day, the Pirates cracked the top-three in four of those events, winning the Novice 8 along the way.

In that winning race, the Pirates dominated the competition, jumping out to an early advantage and never looking back.

Coast finished the 2,000-meter race with a winning time of 7:02.3, nearly 32 seconds ahead of runner-up UC Santa Barbara (7:34.1). Long Beach State finished third with a 7:43.9 and UC Irvine (7:53.1) took fourth.

The 2013 winner of the Varsity 8 Berg Cup went to Loyola Marymount. The Lions used a strong performance and won the cup with a time of 6:45.5, eight-plus seconds ahead of UCSB (6:53.2). OCC took third with a time of 7:03.7, while UC Irvine (7:12.3) and Chapman (8:27) rounded things out.

Coast also picked up a pair of impressive runner-up times in the Varsity 4 (8:09) and the 2nd Novice 8 (7:46.5).

In the 2nd Varsity 8, Coast came in with a fourth-place time of 7:42.7, behind LMU (7:05.2), UCSB (7:24.8) and UCI (7:38.8).

The Pirates will head down to San Diego on April 5-6 to take part in the 2013 Crew Classic.
