Pirate women's crew battles hard at 2015 Berg Cup
NEWPORT BEACH -- Under near-perfect conditions, the Orange Coast College women's crew hosted five of the top local four-year crew programs in the area for the 2015 Berg Cup on Saturday along the Newport Harbor.
The Pirates picked up a couple of solid wins at the Novice 8 level and earned two third-place finishes in the Varsity Four race and the Varsity 8 race.
In the Second Novice 8 matchup with UC Santa Barbara, the Pirates pulled away fast and carried an open-water advantage through most of the 2000-meter competition. Coast finished first with a time of 7 minutes, 19 seconds, while the Gauchos crossed the finish line with a time of 7:55.6.
In the primary Novice 8 race, Coast went up against UCSB, Loyola Marymount and Long Beach State and, much like the second Novice squad, the Pirates grabbed a comfortable lead and were not threatened down the stretch, crossing the line with a time of 6:43.1. UCSB finished second with a time of 7:11, while LMU (7:18.7) took third and Long Beach State (7:19) placed fourth.
In the Varsity Four race, the boats went six-wide and early on, it was anyone's race. Finally, down the stretch, Loyola Marymount pulled away and earned a three-second victory over Long Beach State with a time of 7:33.3. CSULB (7:36) settled for second place, while Coast finished third with a time of 7:46.9.
In the Varsity 8 matchup, the Pirates hung tough with UCSB and LMU for most of the race before taking third place with a time of 6:45.6. The Gauchos edged out LMU for first place with a time of 6:34.5, while the Lions came in at 6:35.1.
Coast will return to the Newport Harbor for more competition on April 11, beginning at 7 a.m.
