Pirate women reclaim Collins Cup
NEWPORT BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's crew took care of some serious business on the waters of the Newport Harbor on Saturday capturing the 2023 Collins Cup against their friendly rivals, the UC Irvine Anteaters.
The Collins Cup -- awarded to the school with the fastest Varsity 8 result -- was earned by the Pirates as they pulled away from the Anteaters early in the 2,000-meter race and held on for a 7-second win, crossing the finish line first with a time of 7 minutes, 14.3 seconds, followed by the Anteaters at 7:21.0.
In OCC's other race of the morning -- the Novice 8 -- Coast (7:52.9) obliterated the Anteaters' "A" boat by 28 seconds (8:20.7) and the UCI "B" boat by nearly 90 seconds (9:21.8).
Unfortunately, due to a steering malfunction with the Novice 4 boat, the Pirates could not compete.
The Pirates will return to competition on April 29-30 at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships (WIRA), held at Sacramento's Lake Natoma. From there, the Pirates will travel to Tennessee for the American Collegiate Racing Association (ACRA) Championships, set for May 19.
