Pirates third after Day 1 of State Meet

LOS ANGELES -- The Orange Coast College women's swim team resides in third place after Thursday's Day 1 action of the 2013 California Community College Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships, held at East Los Angeles College.

The Pirates earned 123 points after the first day of competition and trail Golden West (146) and Diablo Valley (125) with two more days of events ahead.

Leading the way for the Pirates was a spectacular performance by sophomore Mackenzie Bailie, who broke the State Meet record in the 100-yard individual medley, but was out-touched at the wall by 2012 state champ, Santa Rosa's Alexandria Holland. Holland won the title with a time of 57.67, while Bailie timed in at 57.71. Both times topped the previous-best time of 57.91, set by OCC's Michelle Kirkpatrick in 2010.

Bailie joined Claire Aguilar, Laura Lastfogel and Sierra Driessen in the 200 freestyle relay and finished second in the state with a time of 1:36.92, topped only by local rival Golden West, which set a State Meet record with a time of 1:35.28.

OCC's 400 medley relay of Bailie, Aguilar, Vivianne Mai and Sophie Shiba finished sixth overall with a time of 4:02.99.

Laura Lastfogel earned a spot in the finals of the 50 free and finished eighth with a time of 24.9.

In diving, Rae Adams finished eighth in the 1-meter springboard with a score of 165.65, while teammate Brehz Dulac took 11th with a 163.15.

The CCCAA Swimming and Diving State Championships continue today and Saturday out at East L.A. College. Live coverage of the State Meet can be found by logging on to http://takeitlive.tv/liveswim/?page_id=3539.
