Bailie's butterfly gold helps Pirates to fifth-place state finish

LOS ANGELES -- Mackenzie Bailie's state-championship performance in the 100-yard butterfly helped cap off a successful weekend for the Orange Coast College women's swim team at the 2013 California Community College Athletic Association Swimming and Diving State Championships at East Los Angeles College.

The Pirates finished fifth overall with a team score of 327 points. Golden West won the team title with 445, followed by Diablo Valley (415), Ventura (387.5) and Santa Rosa (338).

It was a weekend of highs and lows for Bailie at this year's event. On Friday, she set the State Meet record in the 50 butterfly with a time of 24.95 in the preliminaries. However, in the finals, Bailie flinched on the starting blocks of the finals and was disqualified for a false start.

Showing her ability to move beyond that, Bailie returned to individual action on Saturday for the 100 butterfly and edged out several top swimmers to win the state title with a time of 56.45. She out-touched Golden West's Zeineb Kalfallah, who finished second, just .02 of a second behind Bailie. Santa Rosa's Alexandria Holland (57.23) finished third.

Bailie joined Nicole Buck, Vivianne Mai and Claire Aguilar for a third-place time of 1:47.51 in the 200 medley relay.

Buck performed well in the 200 individual medley, finishing fourth with a time of 2:08.78.

In 3-meter diving, OCC's Rae Adams cracked the top three with a third-place score of 198.50.
