Pirates sweep past Vaqueros, Roadrunners

COSTA MESA -- A long, steamy day inside the Peterson Gym worked out well for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team as the Pirates swept past Glendale and College of the Desert during Friday's tri-match action.

In the opener, Coast cruised to a 25-16, 25-6, 25-12 win over the visiting Vaqueros before sweeping past College of the Desert, 25-20, 25-10, 25-21 in the nightcap.

With the wins, Coast improves its record to 5-1 overall before taking on El Camino College on Wednesday night in a nonconference matchup inside the Peterson Gym, beginning at 5 p.m.

In the nightcap with the Roadrunners, visiting COD put a little fear into the Pirates by keeping things close in the first and third sets, only to see the depth of the Pirate offense carry the hosts to victory.

In the two matches, middle blocker Paige Cutwright led the way with 12 kills, while Brisa Zapata-Reaves and Natalia Brandlin each added nine, Izzy Duchaine chipped in eight and Leah Thibault knocked down seven.
