Red-hot Pirates continue to roll with big win at Riverside

RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team is continuing its dominant play and last week, the Pirates exacted some payback on the team that handed them their last defeat.

The Pirates used the strong play of hitters Nika Safavi and Kennedy Cutler to roll past Riverside City College, 25-20, 23-25, 25-11, 25-16, to maintain their share of first place in the Orange Empire Conference. Safavi led the way with 23 kills and 12 digs, while Cutler added 22 kills and eight digs to lead OCC's strong offensive play.

Setter Jordan Packer dished out 44 assists to go along with 10 digs and a team-best five aces, while Sophia Wirtzer anchored the Coast defense with a team-high 13 digs.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 18-2 overall, 10-1 in the OEC, joining Saddleback (14-4, 10-1) atop the standings, with Riverside two losses back (15-7, 9-3) and Cypress three back (11-11, 8-4).

After falling to the Tigers at home back on Sept. 27, the Pirates have found another gear, ripping off eight straight wins, including seven wins by way of three-set sweeps. Coast has won 24 of the past 25 sets played over that stretch.

The Pirates will play at Golden West College on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. to wrap up a tough stretch of six road matches over the past eight contests. OCC will return home on Friday against Cypress (6 p.m.) and will play three of their final four matches inside the friendly confines of the Basil H. Peterson Gym.
