Pirates fight hard, but fall to Tigers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team put forth a strong effort against one of the top teams in the state, but in the end, Riverside City College proved too much as the Pirates fell, 17-8, on Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.
With last year's state leading scorer Bailey Lloyd out with an injury, the shorthanded Pirates (2-7, 0-1 in OEC) gave the visiting Tigers (6-2, 2-0) all they had, but a slow start to the first half did the hosts in.
Coast fell behind 6-0 in the first half and it could have been more if not for the strong play of fill-in goalie Melyssa Costa, who picked up nine saves in the match and five in the first half alone.
In the third quarter, OCC found some offensive life and matched the Tigers, 5-5 in the third. Emily Gonzalez scored twice in the quarter, while Mailani Wendt, Gabby Covarrubias and Allison Williams each scored once.
Riverside pulled away from the Pirates in the fourth quarter, but Coast fought hard to the end, scoring three of the final four goals of the contest.
Gonzalez, Williams, Covarrubias and Wendt each scored twice for Coast, while Wendt also dished out four assists.
OCC will return to action on Wednesday at Cypress College, beginning at 3 p.m. The Pirates' next home matchup will be on Wednesday, Oct. 10 against Saddleback, also at 3 p.m.
