Pirates' season ends with pair of losses at OEC Championships

FULLERTON -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team saw its 2018 season come to a close this past weekend with a pair of losses at the Orange Empire Conference Championships, hosted by Fullerton College.

In the opening match, Coast took on rival Golden West and came out strong against the Rustlers and trailed only 4-3 after the opening quarter. But in the end, it was GWC which prevailed, 13-4. 

OCC goals were scored by Allison Williams, Emily Gonzalez, Mailani Wendt and Gabby Covarrubias, while in goal, Melyssa Costa notched nine saves.

The offense picked up for Coast in the second match against Saddleback, but the Gauchos managed to post an 18-12 win over the Pirates.

Covarrubias, Gonzalez and Hannah Fonacier had three goals each for Coast, while Williams added two goals and Mailani Wendt added a single goal. Costa came up with eight saves in goal for the Pirates, who finished the season 6-13 overall.
