Pirates go 3-1 at Delta Tournament

STOCKTON -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team made it three wins out of four contests this past weekend up north at the San Joaquin Delta College Women's Water Polo Tournament.

Coast (9-5) kicked things off on Friday against the host Mustangs and proved to be rude guests after topping the hosts, 16-6 in the opener. The Coast defense completely clamped down and didn't allow a single goal until the third quarter. By then, the Pirates had already jumped out to a 13-0 advantage.

Jillian Duwe and Charlotte Gray each had three goals for OCC, while Rhoslyn Contreras, Paige Woodside, Mathea Haggblad and Natalia Perez each scored twice in the win. Ella Walker was strong in goal for her two quarters of work, allowing no goals with seven saves.

It was more of the same for the Pirates in the afternoon session as they cruised to a 19-7 win over Fresno City College. Duwe again found the back of the net early and often, scoring five goals to go along with two assists and three steals. Ana Nardelli had three goals, while Contreras, Karsyn Barteau and Elaine Skierka each added two goals. Goalie Emily Jones went the distance and allowed seven goals with five saves to get the win.

Coast's lone setback came in the opener on Saturday against Sierra College, where the Wolverines posted an 11-8 win. OCC fell behind 8-3 in the first half and tried to rally down the stretch, but came up just short. Duwe had four goals for the Pirates, while in net, Walker had 10 saves.

In the weekend finale, it was a rematch between the Pirates and host Mustangs and again, it was Coast on top with a 13-6 win. OCC's seven-goal second quarter was the difference, giving the Pirates an easy win to wrap the tournament up.

Brooke Baze was OCC's top goal-getter with four, while Duwe and Gray each added three. The goalie tandem of Walker and Jones each allowed three goals and each had three saves in the win.

The Pirates will return home and host Saddleback College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a crucial Orange Empire Conference matchup between two of the top teams in the state.
