COSTA MESA -- It was home sweet home for the Orange Coast College women's water polo team as the Pirates knocked off Fullerton, 12-7, on Friday in the opening round of the Southern California Regional playoffs on Thursday at the OCC Aquatics Pavilion.
With the win, the ninth-seeded Pirates (15-14) earn a spot in the regional quarterfinals where they will take on top-seeded Long Beach City College (33-2) on Friday at OCC, beginning at 9 a.m.
Brooke Baze and Hayden Clark had three goals each for OCC, while Elizabeth Liskey and Emma Willis each added two goals and two assists. In goal, Emily Jones was solid and notched seven saves to pick up the win.
For the Hornets, Elyse Weske had two goals, while Moncerath Maldonado dished out three assists. Brisela Robinson had seven saves in the loss.
In the early parts of the match, the Hornets, who topped OCC in the Orange Empire Conference Tournament last weekend, carried some momentum into Thursday match and led 3-2 late in the opening quarter.
But the Pirates found another gear and outscored the Hornets 9-1 and led 11-4 midway through the fourth quarter. A Fullerton goal by Payton Baughman ended a Hornet scoring drought of nearly 16 minutes of action during the middle quarters of the contest.
