Pirates blank Vikings, 4-0

LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College baseball team played its best all-around game of the season and posted a 4-0 shutout over Long Beach City College on Thursday at LBCC.

Great pitching, timely hitting and error-free defense was the Pirates' gameplan for all nine innings on Thursday as OCC avoided the season sweep against a tough Vikings' club (8-3).

MJ Gabaldon pitched six shutout innings to pick up the win for the Pirates (3-5), allowing just two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Jack Noble earned his second save of the season with three shutout innings, allowing one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.

OCC picked up its first run when Garret Barto singled with two outs and scored on an RBI-triple to center off the bat of Cary Arbolida.

It stayed that way into the seventh inning, when Ryan O'Halloran singled to lead things off and scored three batters later on an RBI-triple by Nolan Funke, putting the Pirates up, 2-0.

Another clutch hit by Arbolida made it 3-0 in the eighth when he singled to center and scored David Morgan from second.

In the ninth, Logan Jackson reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a LBCC error to cap off the scoring.

OCC looks to make it two straight on Saturday at the College of the Desert, beginning at 12 p.m.
