Pirates' offense comes alive with wins over Desert, Canyons

SANTA CLARITA -- After a frustrating start to the 2020 season, the bats are coming alive for the Orange Coast College baseball team as the Pirates scored a combined 35 runs over the past two days with wins over College of the Desert on Thursday and College of the Canyons on Friday.

In Thursday's win over the Roadrunners, Coast blew out COD, 23-1 as the Pirate bats started early and never let up. Nolan Funke went 3-for-5 with four runs and two RBI, while Logan Jackson added two hits, a run and four RBI. David Morgan and Cary Arbolida each hit home runs in the win as well. MJ Gabaldon (2-0) pitched five strong innings against the Roadrunners, allowing no runs on four hits with five strikeouts before turning the ball over to Juan Sanjuan. The sophomore righty collected a four-inning save, allowing one unearned run on five hits with seven strikeouts.

On Friday, the Pirates headed north and pulled away from the host Cougars, 12-8. Coast took the lead for good with a seven-run third inning and never looked back. A pair of two-run singles by Ryan O'Halloran and Hammer Madera helped highlight OCC's touchdown frame. Arbolida went 2-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI, while O'Halloran finished the afternoon going 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.

Starter Jack Noble (1-0) picked up the win with a five-inning performance, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. OCC pitchers combined for 13 Ks for the afternoon against a Cougars' team hitting .340 overall as a group.

Coast will play at Palomar on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before returning to Wendell Pickens Field on Saturday, Feb. 29 against Canyons, beginning at 12 p.m.
