Pirates win ugly; top Rustlers, 8-5

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team allowed 10 hits, walked nine batters, committed three errors and were thrown out on the bases five times ... and STILL managed to pull off an 8-5 win over visiting Golden West College on Thursday at Wendell Pickens Field.

Cary Arbolida continued his red-hot season, going 5-for-5 with two runs and three RBI for the Pirates (10-7, 1-1 in the Orange Empire Conference). It's is second five-hit game over the past 10 days, raising his season average to .491. Logan Jackson went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Oscar Favela and Ryan O'Halloran each collected two hits as Coast evened this week's three-game series with the Rustlers (9-10, 1-1), who won, 8-4 on Tuesday. Game 3 of this series will be on Saturday at GWC, beginning at 12 p.m.

Vinny Tosti went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI, while Luke Chung added a hit and two RBI for the Rustlers.

OCC jumped out to an 8-1 lead through the first five innings. RBI-singles by Arbolida and David Morgan put OCC up 2-0 in the first before RBI-hits by Nolan Funke and Arbolida in the second, doubled the lead to 4-0.

Coast added three runs in the fourth on an RBI-hit by Arbolida, a run-scoring error by the Rustlers and a run-scoring hit by Chase Hanson, putting OCC ahead, 7-1. An RBI-grounder by Logan Jackson pushed the lead up to 8-1 and all seemed right in the world for the Pirates.

MJ Gabaldon wiggled out of damage, allowing just one earned run over 3 1/3 innings in spite of five walks and three hits allowed. Jake Lopez (2-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing just one run over 2 2/3 innings with no walks and two strikeouts.

From there, it was a tight-rope act for the Pirate bullpen, but the hurlers avoided the big mistake to the GWC bats as the Rustlers stranded 14 runners for the afternoon.

OCC will return to Wendell Pickens Field on Tuesday against Irvine Valley, beginning at 2 p.m.
